The Jewish communities listed below are ones that Bronfmanim are involved with or places where there’s some ‘buzz’.

BYFI Alumna Julie Geller (’91) has a wonderful new Rosh Hashanah video for kids David Zvi Kalman (’04) started, a forum where anyone can – anonymously – describe what they’ll be asking forgiveness for on Yom Kippur.

  • Harvard Hillel (four minyan options) - donation requested.
  • The Riverway Project – An innovative project to connect adults in their 20’s and 30s to each other, to Judaism and to Temple Israel of Boston. “Ticketless” services with registration online.
  • Sha'arei Shalom - Join other young people at Sha'arei Shalom in Ashland, MA, where BYFI alumna Rabbi Margie Klein will be leading. Services are songful and soulful, with traditional melodies but a lot of English poetry and kavanot (introductions). $18 suggested donation for as many services as you want to attend.


  • Anshe Shalom B'nai Israel (Liberal Orthodox) - BYFI alum Rabbi David Wolkenfeld is the leader of this groundbreaking liberal orthodox community.
  • Congregation Or Chadash (Reform, GLBT friendly) - BYFI faculty member Larry Edwards' former synagogue. Non-members are welcome; special student rate, no one is turned away.
  • Congregation Rodfei Zedek (Conservative) - BYFI faculty member Larry Edward’s will be leading services as Interim Rabbi. Tickets can be obtained by calling the number on the website and mentioning Rabbi Edward’s name. Students are free.

New York

  • Brooklyn Jews(Reform) - An open community of 20 and 30 something Jews with a traditional service, founded by BYFI faculty member Rabbi Andy Bachman. Sign up is online.
  • Darkhei Noam(Shira Chadasha Style) - Halakhic, spiritual, and inclusive. Tickets are online. An Alumni Venture Fund grantee.
  • Drisha Institute(Orthodox) - Drisha will be hosting a traditional Orthodox minyan at the B'nai Jeshurun Community House. Child care and youth programs will be offered.
  • Kehilat Hadar (Traditional Egalitarian) - Registration and donation required - student option available. Services will be held on the Upper West Side. An Alumni Venture Fund grantee.
  • Kol Haneshamah(Orthodox) - Free, Carlebach-style services with a mechitzah.
  • Lab/Shul- A creative, embodied, and engaged project launched by Storahtelling. Tickets available online.
  • Manhattan Jewish Experience(Orthodox) - Three locations - West Side, East Side, and Downtown. BYFI alum Rabbi Avi Heller is Director of Education.
  • Ohel Ayalah(Traditional Egalitarian) - Free services, primarily for 20-30 somethings. Three locations: Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. Founded by Rabbi Judith Hauptman, mother of a BYFI alumnus.
  • UJA-Federation NY Referral Service(various) - call 1.877.852.6951 or email to be referred to a local synagogue open to non-members for the High Holidays.

San Francisco

  • Mission Minyan (Traditional Egalitarian) - Free services, registration online.
  • The Kitchen (Indie Shabbat Community) – Tickets required, sign up online. An Alumni Venture Fund grantee.


  • Ikar – A progressive and egalitarian Jewish community committed to reclaiming the vitality and relevance of Jewish religious practice. Tickets available online. Washington, D.C.
  • Sixth & I - Tickets required for minimal fee - wide variety of service options. Founded by Esther Foer, mother of BYFI alumni.
  • Fabrangen – An independent, egalitarian, and participatory havurah. Tickets are free, though there is pre-registration for children’s services online. Toronto
  • Makom – Joyous and participatory High Holidays Services, tickets available online. An Alumni Venture Fund grantee.
